How Black Plant Lovers Came To Be

UPDATE: I opened my first retail plant shop in June 2022 in a shipping container at Boxville!

I have been a plant lover & mama for decades.  I have also been a blogger for almost 12 years and I would periodically share my plants but I wanted them to have a platform of their own.

So in June of 2020 I created my Instagram page called Black Plant Lovers.

Almost immediately upon joining the “plantstagram” I realized what an amazing community it was and met so many other Black people who loved plants.

That made it clear to me that Black Plant Lovers the Instagram page had to be more than a place for me to share my plant life.

So I started sharing other Black people who love plants also. Weeks into posting almost daily on Instagram, I realized that I wanted to share my plant love in an even bigger way.

And that is how Black Plant Lovers the shop came to be.

I started spending hours every week researching & learning more about different types of plants.

In the midst of all of that, I knew it was going to take me a bit of time to get things in place to actually sell plants, so I decided that I would start selling what has become our signature logo T-shirt.

It took me weeks to decide on the font & what style of plant I would use for the logo. But one night I finally came up with a design that felt big & bold while still adding a little bit of plant whimsy.

Black Plant Lovers the shop went live on September 7th. I announced it and immediately sold one of our amazing Jute shopper totes with our signature logo on it.

The first customer was one of my Instagram friends (it’s seriously an amazing community) who saw the bag in my stories and instantly loved it as much as I did.

As more orders started coming through, I created more designs, added some cute earrings and cotton tote bags (I always need a bag or two with me so I figured other people do too).

At the end of September I posted the first plants for sale on the site and instantly sold out of all the plant pots and half of the inventory of my prayer plants.

It was such a beautiful confirmation that I was doing exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

I am so very excited to create and source products that celebrate our style and the fun & love we have with/for our plants and ourselves.

You can also expect to find fair priced plants and accessories and products that celebrate other things we love like coffee, tea, books, jewelry & more.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me via our contact page if you have any questions.
